A Free Dental Care Event for Children is being held in Carbondale on Friday.

Most Illinois children don’t visit the dentist until they are 4 years or older. However, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that a child visit the dentist within six months of getting their first tooth – and no later than a child’s first birthday. Delta Dental of Illinois Foundation’s Dentist By 1 program aims to educate caregivers about good oral health habits and the importance of taking children to the dentist by age 1.

The Foundation will provide a day of free dental care for children ages 5 and under. The event will be held at SIU Dental Hygiene Clinic on Friday from 9am to 2pm. Local volunteer dental teams will provide essential preventive and diagnostic services including dental cleanings, exams, fluoride treatments, sealants, and X-rays. Children will also receive a free oral health kit which includes a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and a dental care instructional sheet.
