Two people suffered what are being called significant injuries after they were hit by a train overnight in Du Quoin.

The Du Quoin Police Department was dispatched to the railroad crossing on Main Street just after one a-m due to an accident involving pedestrians and a train.

The Du Quoin Fire Department and the Pinckneyville Ambulance Service also responded to the scene.

When they arrived, officers located two adults with significant injuries. Both patients were transported to Marshall Browning Hospital for treatment. From there, they were transported to other hospitals by helicopter.

It was determined the train involved was an Amtrak passenger train.
