Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul is warning residents to stay alert for scams following recent storms that caused widespread damage across the state.
He says “storm chasers” often move into communities quickly, offering expensive and unnecessary repairs or fake “free” inspections to help with insurance claims. Raoul advises residents to avoid door-to-door solicitations, check licenses for roofers and adjusters, and always get written contracts.
He also reminds consumers that they have three business days to cancel contracts signed at home, and five days if insurance coverage is denied. Contractors must carry insurance and provide a pamphlet outlining homeowners’ rights under state law. Residents are encouraged to shop around, avoid paying in full upfront or in cash, and report suspicious activity.
To check for complaints or verify licensing, visit state websites or call Raoul’s Consumer Fraud Hotline at 1-800-243-0607 in Carbondale. Free resources are available through the Attorney General’s office.
