As cookout season hits its peak, the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office is reminding residents that July sees more grill-related fires than any other month. T

he National Fire Protection Association reports over 9,000 home fires annually caused by gas grills—most linked to leaks, grease buildup, or improper use. State Fire Marshal Michele Pankow encourages Illinoisans to grill outdoors only, keep grills away from structures, and never leave them unattended.

Cleaning your grill and checking propane connections before each use can prevent dangerous flare-ups. With many families enjoying barbecues and outdoor meals, following simple precautions can keep summer gatherings safe.
