Crash Slows Traffic on I-57 in Williamson County

Squad Car

Illinois State Police say traffic may be delayed in Williamson County for much of the day Thursday.

Trooper Joey Watson says a semi pulling a double bottom trailer crashed into a guard rail on I-57 north bound just north of Marion at around 5:00 Thursday morning.

The accident closed the north bound lanes for several hours, as crews worked to clear the damaged truck and parts of the rail.

Because of the traffic back up, State Police are closing the north bound entrance ramps to I-57 in Marion. Watson says while through traffic is being allowed to travel in the area, local drivers are asked to take alternate routes, like highway 148 or 37, in an effort to ease congestion.

Watson and other agencies say traffic will be reduced to one lane in that area for much of the day, because crews must repair the guard rail in the construction zone.
