The Carbondale chapter of the NAACP is hosting its 41st Annual MLK Scholarship Breakfast on January 16th at 7:30 at the SIU Student Center. The program will begin at 8:30 following the breakfast and will spotlight Illinois Lieutenant Governor, Juliana Stratton as the featured speaker. Additionally, students will recite speech passages by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. And winners of the 2023 Oratorical Contest will recite their orations. On Sunday, January 22nd at 10am, The Shawnee Group Sierra club will hike along beautiful Bear Creek, near Little Grand Canyon, seeing Stone Fort along the way. The hike will end at Pomona Winery. This will be a moderate hike of 4.5 miles. You must call Jon Womack at 815-263-9625 in order to attend the hike or to obtain further information.

January is National Blood Donor Month and the Red Cross is urging eligible donors to take time out to give blood for patients in need. It takes about an hour and you can even make an appointment if you would like.  On Friday, January 13th you can donate the gift of life at Carbondale Memorial Hospital from 11am to 4pm and at the Cape Girardeau Blood Donation Center from 7am to 3pm.  Visit www.redcrossblood.org to find more blood drives in your area.
