Illinois residents of African descent are invited to learn more about their heritage by engaging with the Illinois Family Roots Pilot Program. This free, community-based event will be Saturday, January 24th, from 1-4 p.m. at the Carbondale Public Library. Illinois Family Roots is a community-based project that uses DNA testing and genealogical research to help Illinois residents discover and reconnect with their African heritage. Come hear an overview of the program, ask questions, and, if you wish, provide your DNA sample on site with the assistance of trained team members. DNA kits are available free of charge to eligible Illinois participants.
The Coldest Night of the Year is a family-friendly fundraising walk in support Take Action Today & Carbondale Warming Center. On Feb 26th, Gather together for people experiencing hurt, hunger, and homelessness. The event will start and finish at the cafeteria at Carbondale Community High School with registration beginning at 4 and the walk is from 5 to 7pm. https://cnoy.com/location/carbondale
Herrin Public Library hosts Chess at the Library on Friday, January 23 and Friday, February 13. Players can drop in for a game any time between 2pm to 5pm. Whether you're a seasoned player or a complete beginner, the Herrin City Library is a great place to enjoy a game, meet new friends, and challenge yourself. Bring a friend or a family member – everyone’s welcome! We will have three to four boards set up and ready for play in the Adult Reading Lounge. There will also be a table for checkers, if you prefer. Basic texts on how to play chess will be available to every player, if needed. There is no registration required for participation.
