Carbondale city leaders have asked SIU to help understand and reduce gun violence in the city.
Carbondale residents are being asked to take a brief survey on gun violence in the community.
The city council requested SIU to research and conduct the survey which is one of multiple sources of information they’re looking at to determine the nature of gun violence.
The only personal information asked is which one of ten sections of the city people live in.
Criminology and Criminal Justice Professor Dr. Tammy Kochel (Ko-Shell) says the survey ask about people experience with gun violence to pin point where incidents happen.
“That information with people who are living this experience every day. Can help us better understand the nature of gun violence. And again, then the city is planning to support initiatives to address gun violence that are tailored towards the nature of the problems and whatever works against those types of problems.”
The survey can be taken on a phone, tablet or computer, those without internet access can take it at the library.
