Longtime SIU-Carbondale and community leader Sam Goldman passes away

SIU-Carbondale is mourning the passing of Sam Goldman, a longtime Saluki and servant leader at the University and the community.

He passed away Tuesday at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale at the age of 89.

Goldman served at SIU from 1980 until his retirement in 2003, then served as chancellor from 2008 to 2010.

He was also active in the Southern Illinois region, including Hospice of Southern Illinois and Southern Illinois Regional Social Services.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of love may be directed to Camp Ben Frankel; Jewish Federation of Southern Illinois and Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be accepted at Crain Pleasant Grove-Murdale Funeral Home on Old Route 13 in Murphysboro.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
