A graduate of SIU-Carbondale is one of the sailors serving aboard USS Henry M. Jackson, continuing the U.S. Navy’s 124-year tradition of service under the sea to help ensure Americans’ safety.

Master Chief Petty Officer Derick Appel, a native of Edwardsville, earned a bachelor’s degree in electronic technology from SIU in 2007.

He joined the Navy 24 years ago and serves as a missile technician.

Appel says the skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Carbondale, including a good work ethic.
