A Murphysboro native is ready to take command of a nuclear ballistic missile submarine.

Commander Christopher James, a native of Murphysboro, will assume command of the U-S-S Wyoming on July 24 during a ceremony at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay.

As a nuclear-trained submarine officer, James is part of a small percentage of Navy personnel continuing a 125-year tradition of service under the sea to help ensure Americans’ safety.

James graduated from Murphysboro High School in 2002. In 2006, he earned a degree in systems and weapons engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy.

The U.S. Navy is celebrating its 250th birthday this year.
