The SIU Board of Trustees approves performance bonuses for administrators and receives an update on fall enrollment

The SIU Board of Trustees Thursday approved performance bonuses for system president Dan Mahony and Carbondale Campus Chancellor Austin Lane.

The incentive compensation is part of both administrator's contracts with the university. The provision allows for the annual performance bonuses but does not require them to be given.

SIU Board Chair Phil Gilbert recommended Trustees award Mahony the full $115,000 bonus based on the President's performance over the past year. Gilbert says Mahony's presence in Springfield has been instrumental in developing relationships with the legislature and with donors.

The Trustees awarded SIU-Carbondale Chancellor Austin Lane the full $65,000 bonus based on the Chancellor's performance during the past year.

Gilbert says the performance incentives are paid for from funds from the SIU Foundation and not with state dollars.

SIU-Edwardsville Chancellor James Minor did not receive a bonus. But SIU Board Chair Phil Gilbert says that's because of how Minor's contract is constructed. Gilbert added Minor deserves a bonus.

SIU Trustee Ed Hightower said the Foundation is in the process of re-working Minor's contract to fall in line with the incentive packages offered to Mahony and Lane.

The SIU Board of Trustees approved the advancement of Wendell Williams to the position of Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management during its meeting at the SIU School of Medicine in Springfield.

Williams had served as the Associate Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management. The request for the change in title sites an expansion of the scope of his work since his appointment in 2020. School leaders say the impetus for the title of Vice Chancellor is in line with other universities in the state with Vice Chancellors over strategic enrollment management areas.

Williams will receive a 20-thousand dollar pay raise with the Vice Chancellor title. His annual salary will be $185,203.

Chancellor Lane updated the Board of Trustees on the enrollment picture for the campus.

Lane said just over a month from the start of the Fall Semester on August 19, new student enrollment is currently up 14 %.

The Chancellor said graduate student enrollment is currently up 1.5 %, undergraduate students overall are up 1.2 %.

SIU is appointing Angela K. Upchurch as the new acting dean of the law school.

Upchurch has been with the law school since August 2014 as both a professor and as the associate dean for academic affairs and curriculum development.

She is replacing Camille M. Davidson, who became president and dean at Mitchell Hamline School of Law on July 1.

A recognized expert in legal education, children and family law, and procedural law, Upchurch received the university’s tenured and tenure-track Teaching Excellence Award in 2020.

Even though her appointment is temporary, she says she is excited to get started on the new academic year next month.
