SIU Photojournalism Exhibition Showcases Student Works and Community Stories

Southern Illinois University Carbondale is presenting an exhibition that highlights the work of photojournalism students from SIU and Eastern Illinois University. The exhibition, titled "Views of Cobden and Alto Pass from the 2024 SIU Photojournalism Weekend Workshop," will be on display in the rotunda of Morris Library from August 24 to October 31, 2024. The exhibition features 31 photographs taken during a three-day workshop in April, which focused on documenting the lives and stories of people in the Southern Illinois communities of Alto Pass and Cobden.

In addition to the exhibition, there will be a panel discussion on August 24, from 2 to 4 p.m., where students and professional photojournalists will discuss their experiences during the workshop. Julia Rendleman, an assistant professor at SIU's School of Journalism and Advertising, organized the workshop as part of her intermediate photojournalism class. She emphasized the value of the hands-on learning experience, where students received guidance from seasoned photojournalists and developed real-world reporting skills.

Photojournalist Justin Cook, a Pulitzer Center grantee, will participate in the panel discussion. Cook noted that the workshop fostered a collaborative and supportive environment, which energized both the students and professionals involved. Rendleman hopes to continue offering this workshop in spring 2025, expanding the opportunity to more students.
