SIU-Carbondale lays out its plan to celebrate Black History Month

SIU-Carbondale observes Black History Month in February under the theme “A Century of Black History Commemorations.”

Events kickoff this Monday with keynote speaker Sarah Lewis, an award-winning author and associate professor of African and African American studies and humanities at Harvard University. She’ll speak from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the Student Center’s Ballroom B.

Also, in Ballroom B on February 6, seven notable alumni of SIU-Carbondale will be honored for their impact on the Saluki community.

They include:

Longtime SIU educators and administrators Harold Bardo and Melvin Terrell

Longtime educator and trailblazing civil rights pioneer Linda Flowers

Former astronaut Joan Higginbotham

School of Medicine professor and longtime Peace Corps volunteer Ella Lacey

Terrence Roberts, a member of the “Little Rock Nine,” who attempted to desegregate Little Rock Central High School in Arkansas in 1957

Former NBA player and author Mike Glenn, who founded a free basketball camp for hearing impaired athletes
