Hurricanes are just one kind of disaster the Red Cross responds too.

When disasters like hurricanes hit, people may be wondering how to help. One local Red Cross organization says volunteers are needed.

Joe Zydlo, with the St. Louis chapter of the Red Cross said the agency responds to disasters large and small and needs volunteers in many areas.

"We're really actively recruiting volunteers for all types of situations, that could be deployments out of state, in situations like this and Alaska, Puerto Rico, we also have disasters closer to home, there's home fires, there's flooding, obviously we had here in the St. Louis area," he said.

Zydlo said they saw a drop in volunteers during the pandemic and says there are also virtual opportunities for those who aren't able to deploy to disaster areas. He says people can also donate financially to relief funds through the Red Cross. To find out more, visit the Red Cross website.
