The beloved Fort Massac Encampment, a historical celebration in southern Illinois, returns to Fort Massac State Park in Metropolis.

This annual event, now in its 50th year, offers visitors a chance to step back in time and experience life on the Illinois frontier during the 18th and early 19th centuries.

Fort Massac was once a critical military outpost for French, British, and U.S. forces from 1757 to 1814, and the encampment brings this history to life through reenactments and demonstrations.

Hundreds of participants in period attire will recreate the roles of soldiers, traders, and settlers, performing mock battles and tactical demonstrations.

In addition to military reenactments, visitors can explore period crafts such as blacksmithing, basket weaving, and more.

Family-friendly activities, live music, and traditional foods like burgoo, barbecue, and homemade root beer will also be available.

The event kicks off Saturday with the “Posting of the Colours” ceremony at 10 a.m., and closes both days with a military retreat.

Admission is free, and parking is available at the Old Fairgrounds.

Trams will transport attendees to and from the encampment. Fort Massac State Park will be closed to vehicles during festival hours.

The event is scheduled for October 19 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and October 20 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
