The Illinois Senate has approved legislation that will allow County Sheriffs to serve on local 911 boards.
Bill sponsor, State Representative Patrick Windhorst from Metropolis, says the bill was brought to him by the Illinois Sheriff's Association. He says the previous law was unclear whether County Sheriffs could serve in this role as well.
"It's possible that the office is incompatible with serving on the board. So, we needed to clarify that, in law, to show that the law is clear and explicit that County Sheriffs can serve on these local 911 boards."
Windhorst says County Sheriffs are well-qualified members of the law enforcement community and also very familiar with their how their county’s 911 system works.
The bill now heads to Governor JB Pritzker’s desk.
