Attorney General Kwame Raoul announced the finalization of a national bipartisan settlement with Kroger. The grocery chain is to pay $1.37 billion to states and local governments for its role in the opioid crisis.
Illinois will receive over $40 million allocated according to the Illinois Opioid Allocation Agreement. The agreement, negotiated through Raoul's office, ensures the funds are allocated equitably.
Raoul said quote, "This settlement ensures Kroger is held accountable and allows resources to reach communities hardest hit by this ongoing opioid crisis that continues to affect all corners of America."
The funds will go to the Illinois Remediation Fund which will then go towards abatement programs throughout the state. Kroger has also agreed to ensure pharmacies monitor, report, and share data about suspicious activity related to opioid prescriptions.
