A longtime member of the Carbondale Fire Department is taking over the department as the new chief.

Jay Crippen will become Carbondale’s new Fire Chief this Sunday, February 1.

Crippen brings more than 27 years of fire service experience to the position, including 24 years with the Carbondale Fire Department. A lifelong Carbondale resident, Crippen is a graduate of SIU-Carbondale.

Former Police Chief and current City Manager Stan Reno says Crippen has demonstrated leadership, institutional knowledge and long-standing commitment to public safety in Carbondale.
