The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking input from the public about the 2017 Rail Plan.
The Plan, a federally required update every five years, is an overview of the state's existing passenger and freight facilities and operations along with strategies for long-term goals.
One highlight in the plan is the improvements made to the Chicago - St. Louis passenger rail corridor.
Illinois has the second-largest rail system in the U.S. and is the only state where all seven Class I railroads operate.
Nearly half of the more than one billion tons of freight, valued at 2.97 trillion dollars, that moves in Illinois each year, is transported by rail.
