Southern Illinois University will hold their annual flag vigil at the flag pole near the center of campus to publicly commemorate Veterans Day.
This year marks the 42nd anniversary of the vigil which honors the brave Southern Illinois veterans who served their country in the US armed forces.
The SIU Air Force and Army ROTC programs, in partnership with SIU Veterans Services are coordinating this vigil and will unveil a shadow box to posthumously honor SIU alumnus and retired Lt. Col. Harvey Welch.
Lt. Welch was the first Black player on the Saluki basketball team in 1951 and served 20 years in the Air Force.
The vigil will begin at 6 a.m. on Saturday at the Old Main Flagpole, and the shadowbox unveiling will be at 11 a.m.
