The death of an infant in southeast Missouri had led to an arrest.

The Perryville Police Department reports 23-year-old Blanca Marisela Mendez Ramirez has been charged with Abuse or Neglect of a Child-resulting in Death and First Degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

On Saturday afternoon, officers were notified by a social worker from St. Louis Children’s Hospital that an 8-month-old girl had been transported to the facility.

According to the social worker, doctors at Perry County Memorial Hospital had resuscitated the child after she suffered multiple head traumas and multiple broken bones consistent with intentional abuse.

Detectives discovered the mother of the child had left the 8-month-old in the care of their female roommate -- identified as Ramirez -- until the father returned home from work about an hour after the mother left for work. The father discovered the child unresponsive in the bedroom and took the child to the local hospital.

The child passed away due to her injuries on Monday. Ramirez was arrested on Tuesday.
