Authorities in Jefferson County and the Illinois State Police conducted a search Tuesday to look for more information about the human remains found outside Mt. Vernon last week.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department was joined by the Coroner's Office, Fire Protection District, fire departments in Mt. Vernon, Woodlawn and Waltonville, Illinois State Police Forensic Services, Canine Search and Rescue Teams, and Litton Ambulance to search fields and wooded areas west of Davidson Avenue and Veterans Memorial Drive in rural Mt. Vernon.

It says the search was successful in recovering multiple pieces of potential evidence.

Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Bullard said last week the person had been dead for quite some time.
