Carbondale AAUW chapter to Host ‘History of Free Black Settlements in Southern Illinois’

The American Association of University Women Carbondale Branch is hosting a free event in honor of Black History Month. Join them at the African American Museum in the Carbondale mall on Tuesday, February 14 at 7pm for a presentation on historic free Black settlements in southern Illinois.

Kimberly France has spent the past two years studying her family’s genealogy, which helped her uncover fascinating local history. She will discuss her family’s history, historical information on free Black settlements, and genealogical research methods.

France is an attorney and pharmacist who is from Carbondale. France established the Locust Grove Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to research, education, and preservation of information on Black settlements in southern Illinois.
