A Murray State University Football player was released from the team this weekend after being taken into custody on drug charges.
According to a release, Murray Police on Saturday observed suspicious activity in a parking lot on North 12th Street and conducted a traffic stop. Police spoke with vehicle operator Corey Newble, 20, of Jackson, Tennessee and detected the odor of marijuana.
After searching the car with the owner's consent, police found a handgun and small baggies of cocaine.
Newble's charges are trafficking in marijuana, trafficking a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school and possession of a controlled substance (cocaine). He was taken to the Calloway County Jail. His bond amount is $20,000.
According to goracers.com, Newble was a freshman and a wide receiver on the football team. Head coach Mitch Stewart announced in a release on Sunday Newble has been released from the program for violation of team rules.
