Deanna Price gets ready to unleash a throw at the Summer Olympics in Paris on August 6, 2024.

History was made Tuesday for Team USA in the women's hammer throw at the Olympic Games in Paris.

Unfortunately for SIU fans, Saluki Hall of Famer Deanna Price was not the one making history.

Price finished 11th in the finals and did not qualify for the medal round.

But, the other American in the competition, Annette Echikunwoke, earned the silver medal. She becomes the first American woman to medal in Olympic hammer throw competition.

The Ohio-born Echikunwoke, whose parents are both from Nigeria, qualified to compete in the Tokyo Games to represent her family’s home nation.

But, in a devastating turn, she was among of group of Nigerian athletes disqualified for missing doping screenings due to an administrative error, and therefore was deemed unable to compete.

World champion Camryn Rogers from Canada won the gold medal in Paris. China's Zhao Jie won the bronze.

Three-time defending Olympic champion Anita Wlodarczyk from Poland finished fourth.
