All Species Puppet Parade and Eco-Puppet Making Workshops
The Beloved Puppetistas invite you to Saturday puppet-making workshops beginning on Saturday March 9 from 10:00am - 2:00pm and running through April 20. Create puppets of your favorite species in preparation for the 10th annual All Species Puppet Parade taking place on Earth Day, April 22. Puppets are made from cardboard, recycled, and gifted materials, crafted and decorated during the workshop. Some are wearable, others can be supported using bamboo poles. We have lots of fun supplies for you to use. No experience is necessary. All workshops are free, and everyone is welcome. Join us for this community celebration of all species that inhabit this good earth. Workshops take place at the Rainbow Cafe LGBT Center 118 N. Illinois Avenue Carbondale

Wildlife & Wild Places Photography Contest
Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge is seeking nature photos of Southern Illinois public lands. All photos must be taken south of I-64 on federal or state or local parks, refuge or forestry lands and be in one of these categories: Landscape /Scenic; Birds; Other Wildlife; Flowers/Plants/Trees/Fungi; Pollinators/Insects/Spiders; or Photos taken on Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge. In addition, we are introducing a new annual theme category and this year’s theme will be Reflections. Photos taken by youth (17 and under) will be judged separately. Photos should be submitted at the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge Visitor’s Center Gift Shop by Sunday, April 7, 2024. The Visitor’s Center is located 6987 Headquarters Road, Marion and is open 8-4:30 daily.

Bats are essential to a healthy ecosystem, as they eat insects that are pests to trees, crops, and us. Most bats use trees as their daytime roosts during spring, summer, and fall. If you have good places for bats to hunt for food, how do you attract them to roost on your property?Dr. Joy O'Keefe , Assistant Professor and Wildlife Extension Specialist at the University Of Illinois, will speak on what makes good natural and artificial roost habitat for bats and other ways to support your local bat population.
