    The City of Carbondale, Southern Illinois Collaborative Kitchen, and the Carbondale Branch of the NAACP invite members of the community to attend the Carbondale “At the Table” Dinner & Dialogue series on Tuesday, May 21st 2024, at the Carbondale Civic Center.

    The Carbondale Branch of the NAACP and the City of Carbondale will celebrate the 70th anniversary of Brown v. the Board of Education, a landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court to establish racial segregation in public schools as unconstitutional. The Carbondale Branch of the NAACP will present a reenactment, “Brown @ 70: Celebrating the Past, Shaping the Future” to kick off the evening. Following the reenactment, attendees will discuss the impact of this landmark decision and equity within educational systems.

    The Carbondale “At the Table” Dinner & Dialogue Series will occur on the third Tuesday of the month through June. The Carbondale “At the Table” Dinner & Dialogue Series brings an intersection of topics ranging from culture, racism, history, and racial healing to the table through facilitated conversations so that community members from diverse backgrounds can engage in dialogue while enjoying a community meal.

A Day for Spinal Cord Injury & Conditions Impairing Mobility
The Illinois chapter of the United Spinal Association is hosting a free event to discuss issues that many individuals with differing mobility impairments face daily. Many of the subjects will be relevant to multiple disabilities, and everyone who would like to learn more about these issues is welcome (including family/caregivers of individuals with disabilities). Remote attendance is possible. (Once people register, a Zoom link will be sent to anyone electing to attend remotely.) Lunch is included for those who attend in person.

The event will include speakers on vocational rehabilitation (preparing for/obtaining employment, ADA protections, etc.), service dogs (SIT Service Dogs), wound care, adaptive driving and accessible parking, bladder care/medical complications, and a panel discussion about living with a disability. We will also have a speaker from the SI Center for Independent Living.
Annabelle Festival Book Sale
This is a 3-day book sale beginning on Friday, June 7, for Friends from 4-6pm, and continues with a public sale on Saturday, June 8, from 8am - 2pm. It ends with a bag sale on Sunday from 1-3pm.
Southern Illinois Underground Railroad author speaks
SIU Press author, Carol Pirtle, will talk about her research and book about a 19th century Sparta, IL farmer who participated in the Underground Railroad.

Christmas in July Trivia Night
Angels' Cove is a residential maternity home that provides hope to expectant mothers by providing a stable living environment, education classes, and other supportive services. Angels' Cove is a program of the Baptist Children's Home and Family Services. We will be hosting a Christmas in July Trivia Night to raise funds to be able to continue to help and support expectant mothers. Teams will consists of up to 8 players and the cost is $20 per player. There will also be a silent auction and food will be available during the evening. Decorate your teams table to win a special prize.
