High-speed internet is needed for digital learning and telemedicine.

Pro-Tek Fiber says it's halfway through an expansion project to bring lightning-fast fiber internet to more communities across southern Illinois.

The Marion-based company says fiber internet is coming very soon to Freeman Spur, Plumfield, Cleburne and rural Zeigler.

Pro-Tek Fiber says later this year, it expects to bring faster internet service to rural Elkville, Dowell, Dongola, the West Frankfort Lake area, Akin, rural Vienna and rural Jonesboro.

The company also says while its fiber network remains online, the power outage following Friday's tornado is affecting local connectivity. To help, it's deployed a mobile WiFi hotspot at the intersection of Quarter Horse & Andrew Road South of Marion.
