Federal grant comes through for Crab Orchard trails

Rep. Bost's office

A project funded during the Biden administration is coming to southern Illinois.

The Federal Highway Administration has delivered $11.1 million for the Crab Orchard Greenway Multimodal Network, supporting construction of 12 miles of new multi-use trails.

This initiative aims to enhance safety and accessibility for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists, while providing alternative transportation and recreational opportunities for nearby communities such as Marion, Herrin, Crainville, Carterville, and Carbondale.

The project will also divert non-motorized traffic from the Route 13 shoulders, promoting safer travel.

The 12 miles of new trails will contribute to a larger 50-mile trail network along the Route 13 corridor.
