Mail was reported stolen in three different counties

Two people from Centralia are accused of Mail Theft and Financial Institution Fraud.

The U.S. Attorney's office has indicted Matthew Woods and Jessica Smith.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office started an investigation on July 6th, 2021.

Deputies responded to a report of an abandoned vehicle on Grand Road in Woodlawn. It was determined the vehicle was stolen out of Centralia.

A search of the vehicle revealed various pieces of mail from the Woodlawn and Grand Prairie Township area. Detectives then learned several pieces of the recovered mail had been stolen from multiple areas, including Jefferson, Marion, and Clinton Counties.

Woods and Smith were identified as suspects based on an investigation by several local and federal agencies.
