The suspect in a murder investigation in Murphysboro has surrendered to authorities.

The Jackson County State's Attorney reports 49-year-old Daron Woods of Murphysboro turned himself into the Jackson County Sheriff's office late Thursday night.

He faces two counts of First Degree Murder related to the death of 29-year-old Maurice Funches.

Murphysboro Police found Funches body in the 200 block of North 13th Street. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.

The investigation by Murphysboro Police and the Jackson County Sheriff's Department identified Woods as the suspect.

The investigation suggests the two were involved in an altercation in which Woods is accused of stabbing Clyde Boozer. After Funches intervened to assist Boozer, Woods is charged with shooting and killing Funches. Boozer was treated and released at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
