The City of Carbondale water system recently violated a drinking water standard.

In a written release, the City reports this was not an emergency situation and is not an immediate risk.

The release went on to explain surface water systems -- or groundwater under the influence of surface water -- using conventional filtration treatment must demonstrate that Total Organic Carbon removals are in compliance with either the Step 1 removal requirements or meet the requirements of alternative compliance criteria. Carbondale's supply was unable to meet the requirements during the monitoring period in the 2nd quarter of this year.

City officials say customers do not need to take any action. The water is safe for normal use since Total Organic Carbon does not have any health effects, but is monitored since it may affect other water quality parameters.

They say customers do not need to use an alternative water supply, such as bottled water, but if someone has specific health concerns they should consult a doctor.
