A student at SIU-Carbondale was killed in Saturday's motorcycle collision in Jackson County.

A preliminary investigation showed two motorcycles, driven by Collin Rice and Tyler Hill, were westbound early Saturday morning on Dowell Road.

While Rice was passing Hill the motorcycles possibly came into contact with one another. Rice lost control of the motorcycle and crashed. Rice was ejected, suffered major injuries, and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Oak Park resident was studying Aviation Management at SIU.

Tyler Hill was able to bring his motorcycle to more of a controlled stop or minor crash. Hill suffered a non-life threatening injury and was transferred to an area hospital.

Deputies say alcohol impairment appears to be a contributing factor to the crash. Neither rider was wearing a motorcycle helmet.

The cause and circumstances of the crash are being investigated by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit.
