Illinois State Police and other law enforcement agencies are investigating the shooting of a Mounds police officer.
Troopers say the Mounds Police Department responded to the 900 block of 3rd Street at around seven o'clock Wednesday morning.
They found an armed man attempting to break into a residence. The suspect and officer exchanged gunfire.
The officer was hit and transported to a Cape Girardeau hospital. KFVS identified the officer as Lyle Womack. He's listed in stable condition.
The suspect fled the scene on foot. Authorities say the 16-year-old male juvenile was arrested after he sought medical attention for a minor gunshot wound. The suspect is being held at the Franklin County Youth Detention Center in lieu of $1,000,000 bond on attempted murder and aggravated battery charges.
