ON THIS DAY in 1974 Muhammad Ali defeats George Foreman by Knock Out in the 8th round of “The Rumble in the Jungle” in the country of Zaire to regain the world heavyweight boxing title.

Locally,

The Friends of the Shawnee National Forest, along with the United States Forest Service and University of Illinois Extension host a trash blast this Friday, November 1st from 1 to 3 p.m. at Forest Service Road 1901 in Hardin County. Volunteers should meet at the Iron Furnace and carpooling is appreciated. Wear closed-toe shoes, bring your work gloves, water and a snack.

 

Illinois EPA is sponsoring a free, one-day household chemical collection to be held at the Banterra Center south parking lot this Saturday, November 2. Illinois residents can safely drop-off waste at the site from 8am to 3pm. To participate in the event, residents are asked to schedule an appointment online at www.jchdonline.org or call 618-684-3143 ext. 128. They will accept a wide array of items but the items not accepted can be viewed on their website.

 

In Carbondale, The SIU School of Music will perform “Halloween Pops”. A free concert tonight at Shryock Auditorium at 7pm with live spooky music, lots of candy and a costume contest with prizes.
