After more than four decades, SIU Athletics will have a new voice for play-by-play

A legend in SIU Athletics is stepping aside.

Hall of Fame Broadcaster and Voice of the Salukis Mike Reis announced his resignation Wednesday night.

Reis is a 1978 SIU Carbondale graduate, and began his broadcasting career at WSIU. He moved on from there to be the play-by-play sportscaster for SIU Sports at WCIL in 1978.

In his 44 seasons, Reis called the 1983 national championship for SIU Football, two Sweet 16 appearances for SIU Men's Basketball - in 2002 and 2007, and the 1977 College World Series - while he was still a student.

Reis says simply "it's time," and says he isn't moving to another job, and his health is "fine."

SIU has not announced plans for Reis's replacement.
