Leaders at SIU-Carbondale will kick off Phase 1 of the new student housing project known as Saluki Village with a special event next week to begin clearing space for the development.

Part of the new housing project involves the university taking down long-vacant residence halls along the old Greek Row.

Chancellor Austin Lane says he's been eyeing something like this since he would ride his bike past these buildings after he came to campus five years ago.

Phase 1 includes the demolition of Colyer, Kaplan, Thalman, Fulkerson, Kesnar, and Wakeland Halls—all former residence halls that have been closed for years due to safety concerns and high renovation costs. The demolition is expected to continue through September.

SIU-Carbondale leaders are going to kickoff Phase 1 with a Demolition Day event at 4 p.m. Wednesday, August 6. The event will include knocking down a portion of Fulkerson Hall.
