Route 51 Dedicated to Fallen Hero LCpl. Drew M. Uhles

A section of Route 51 in Du Quoin, Illinois, has been officially renamed the LCpl. Drew M. Uhles Memorial Highway, honoring the brave sacrifice of Lance Corporal Drew M. Uhles, who lost his life in Iraq nearly 20 years ago.

The dedication ceremony, held on September 14, was led by State Senator Terri Bryant and State Representative David Friess.

The renaming was enacted through House Joint Resolution 67, passed during the spring legislative session.

LCpl. Uhles, a native of St. Johns, Illinois, served with the 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, based in Twentynine Palms, California.

During his service, he was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon, Purple Heart, and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal for his bravery.

He tragically died on September 15, 2004, after sustaining injuries in enemy action in the Al Anbar Province, Iraq.

During the ceremony, Du Quoin Mayor Josh Downs shared personal memories of Uhles, recalling his time in school and the high school band with him.

Downs emphasized that Uhles’ decision to serve the country reflected his deep commitment to his community.

Signs installed by the Illinois Department of Transportation will now forever honor LCpl. Uhles’ legacy and heroism.
