12 rail corridors in Illinois will each receive $500,000 for expansions and renovations.
The federal funds come through the new Corridor Identification and Development Program, which was established under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
One of the rail lines receiving the funding will be the Chicago to Carbondale Corridor.
Illinois U.S. Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth say the purpose of the new funding Program is to develop a comprehensive intercity passenger rail planning and development program that will help guide rail development throughout the country and create a pipeline of passenger projects.
