The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has announced upcoming ramp closures on Interstate 57 at Illinois 149 (exit 65) in West Frankfort, which will impact traffic for several days as part of a larger infrastructure improvement project.
Beginning on September 23, 2024, the northbound I-57 exit ramp will close for approximately five days.
This will be followed by the closure of the southbound I-57 entrance ramp at the same location on October 7, also expected to last for five days.
These closures are necessary to facilitate the construction of two modern roundabouts at the intersection of Illinois 149 and I-57.
In addition to the roundabouts, the project includes new lighting and drainage improvements, which are designed to enhance safety and traffic flow at this critical intersection.
Once completed, these upgrades are expected to significantly improve the efficiency of traffic movement and reduce congestion in the area.
Motorists are encouraged to plan their routes accordingly and allow for extra travel time due to the closures.
Detour routes will be clearly marked, and IDOT is urging drivers to stay alert, obey posted speed limits, and avoid using mobile devices in the work zone.
