Littering harms the environment and can attract fines upto $1,500 in Illinois.

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is encouraging everyone to help keep Illinois roads clean and protect the environment by putting trash where it belongs and remembering to “Put a Lid on Litter!”

Last year, IDOT spent nearly $27 million statewide picking up litter and removing large debris. That’s the equivalent of buying 100 maintenance trucks and could also pay to resurface 22 miles of interstate highway.

Littering harms the environment and can attract fines upto $1,500 in Illinois.

In 2024, volunteer groups in IDOT's Adopt-A-Highway program reported that they logged almost 800 hours with 2000 volunteers helping with cleanup activities. To become a volunteer, visit the Adopt-A-Highway page on idot.illinois.gov.
