The Illinois Emergency Management Agency has some tips to stay safe and warm during the winter weather.
Agency spokesperson Kevin Sur said that anyone going outside to enjoy the snow should make sure to dress warmly and ensure that those vulnerable to the cold are bundled up as well.
"Wear mittens instead of gloves, to keep your fingers a lot warmer than they should be, and then of course with small children, infants, and maybe even some of the elderly, you want to keep them warm because they are more vulnerable to some of the cold weather," he said.
Sur said people should avoid going out if they can, because snow and ice make for hazardous driving conditions. He also reminds people that, in the event of a power outage, generators should never be used inside the house or in an enclosed space like a garage or basement.
