An employee at a Jefferson County school district is dead after a boat capsized over the weekend.

The Opdyke-Belle Rive School District posted on its Facebook page about the loss of maintenance worker and bus driver Jim Likens.

The Jefferson Fire Protection District was notified Sunday one of the two people on a capsized boat had not resurfaced in a secluded pond in rural Belle Rive.

Two rescue divers with the Benton Fire Department dive team worked for around 45 minutes attempting to locate the missing boater.

Three boats were then deployed with sonar and additional divers to further the search efforts. Illinois DNR was also on scene with a remote controlled sonar scanner.

Multiple water craft were able to find a target location, divers re-entered the water and found Likens and removed him from the water.
