Matthew Desmond is a professor of sociology at Princeton University and author of the award winning book Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City. Desmond’s research focuses on poverty in the United States, city life, housing insecurity, public policy, racial inequality, and ethnography.

Desmond is the recipient of a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship and was listed in 2016 among the Politico 50, as one of “fifty people across the country who are most influencing the national political debate.”

This event will be recorded, though the recording will only be available to Zoom registrants. Registrants will be able to access the recording for 3 days after receiving the link in their email.

WSIU, the Carbondale Public Library, and ITVS invite you to a free film screening, dinner, and community conversation on a PBS Independent Lens film. Join us 5-7pm on third Tuesdays, January-May 2025 at the Carbondale Public Library. Film titles and descriptions available at carbondalepubliclibrary.org/indielens

A free dinner will be available for the first 35 attendees shortly before the film starts. After the screening, join us for a discussion on the film and how it relates to our Carbondale community.

ABOUT INDIE LENS: Presented by WSIU and Carbondale Public Library, Indie Lens Pop-Up is a neighborhood series that brings people together for film screenings and community-driven conversations. Featuring documentaries seen on PBS’s Independent Lens, Indie Lens Pop-Up draws residents, leaders, and organizations to discuss what matters most, from newsworthy topics and social issues, to family and community relationships. The City of Carbondale will celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month during the Carbondale “At the Table” Dinner & Dialogue series on Tuesday, May 20th at the Carbondale Civic Center. The theme for this month’s discussion is A Country of Migrants: Honoring the Integral Role of Asian Americans in Shaping the American Identity. William Lo, Executive Director of the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce, will kick off the evening by sharing his family’s migrant story and reflecting on AAPI history and heritage.

The Carbondale “At the Table” Dinner & Dialogue Series will occur on the third Tuesday of the month through June. The Carbondale “At the Table” Dinner & Dialogue Series brings an intersection of topics ranging from culture, racism, history, and racial healing to the table through facilitated conversations so that community members from diverse backgrounds can engage in dialogue while enjoying a community meal served by New Kahala Chinese Cuisine.

SI Stitchers is a local chapter of the Embroiderers’ Guild of America, Inc., which supports and promotes Embroidery, Crewel, Cross-stitch, Needlepoint, Hand Quilting, Beading, and other Needle Arts.
