The man accused of killing a student at SIU-Carbondale in August 2021 has been indicted.

The Jackson County State's Attorney's office reports 22-year-old Keavonte Nesby of Louisville, Kentucky faces two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, and one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon for the death of SIU student Keeshanna Jackson, who was shot outside a house party during the opening week of the fall semester in 2021.

The shooting occurred at a large house party at 501 West Cherry Street in Carbondale. Four people suffered gunshot wounds. Jackson, who was a freshman at SIU-Carbondale, was pronounced dead at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

In announcing the charges against Nesby in August, Jackson County State's Attorney Joe Cervantez said Nesby did not have any association with the University. He said the shooting occurred between two rival groups that were feuding at the time of the incident.

Nesby's preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 15.
