The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has announced significant ramp closures on Interstate 57 at Illinois 149 in West Frankfort. Starting August 5, 2024, the northbound I-57 entrance ramp at Illinois 149 (exit 65) will be closed for approximately five days. Following this, the southbound I-57 exit ramp at the same location will also be closed for about five days starting August 19, 2024.
These closures are part of a comprehensive $6.3 million project aimed at improving the interchange. The project will convert the existing intersections into modern roundabouts to enhance traffic flow and safety. In addition to the roundabouts, the project will include new lighting, drainage improvements, bridge repairs, and accommodations for pedestrians and bicyclists.
The overall goal is to complete these enhancements by 2025. Drivers are advised to stay informed about changing conditions, follow detour signs, adhere to posted speed limits, and remain alert for construction workers and equipment.
