The Carbondale City Council received a design update on the Southern Illinois Multi Modal Station at their meeting on Tuesday.
Architects with Designs works and HMB Architects presented 60% of the construction documents to the City Council this week.
The new station will house Amtrak, the Chamber of Commerce, Carbondale Main Street, Carbondale Tourism, and space for SIU.
A proposed second floor work area was eliminated and worked into the main floor.
Architect Thad Heckman says they were able to clear numerous hurdles recently.
“We now have Canadian national approval, especially with some easement approaches on our exiting. We have, I doubt, approvals. We have met with the various agencies, Amtrak, transit authorities, et cetera, on the way out and all have given us the go ahead.”
They expect to start the bidding process in August.
