Deputies say they're still investigating each incident

A Royalton man was killed early Saturday in a crash in rural De Soto.

Sheriff's deputies were called just before 4:00am Saturday to Creekside Lane, where they found a side-by-side utility vehicle had crashed.

Twenty-one year old Zachary Staggs was driving the vehicle, and lost control, rolling over and hitting a tree. Staggs was killed.

Three other passengers were also in the vehicle when it crashed - they were taken to area hospitals for treatment.

Staggs was a Lieutenant in the Ziegler Fire Department.

A few hours later, another crash caused a fire in rural Makanda, and killed the driver.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Department received a call around 10:30 Saturday morning, reporting a Ford F-250 off the road along U.S. 51 just north of Rifle Range Road.

The caller reported the truck was on fire, and that the fire had spread into the woods nearby.

Investigators say the truck was northbound when the driver left the roadway and hit tree. The driver wasn't wearing a seatbelt - and was thrown out of the vehicle. They were pronounced dead at the scene, and identification is being withheld until family can be notified.
